Who is Jesus?

1. Galilee: City of Capernaum–Repentance (4:12-17)
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, / the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people dwelling in darkness / have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, / on them a light has dawned.”
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
- The people who walked in darkness / have seen a great light;
- those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, / on them has light shone.
- You have multiplied the nation; / you have increased its joy;
- they rejoice before you / as with joy at the harvest, / as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
- For the yoke of his burden, / and the staff for his shoulder, / the rod of his oppressor, / you have broken as on the day of Midian.
- For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult / and every garment rolled in blood / will be burned as fuel for the fire.
- For to us a child is born, / to us a son is given;
- and the government shall be upon his shoulder, / and his name shall be called
- Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, / Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
- Of the increase of his government and of peace / there will be no end,
- on the throne of David and over his kingdom, / to establish it and to uphold it
- with justice and with righteousness / from this time forth and forevermore.
- The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:1-7)
2. Galilee: By the Sea of Galilee: Discipleship (4:18-22)
- While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
- And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
- Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
- And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.
- Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. (Mark 1:29)
Jesus gives Authority and Calling
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; (Matthew 10:1-2)
Jesus Explains the End Times
And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” (Mark 13:3-4)

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew… (Acts 1:12-13)

When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” (John 21:21-22)
Time of Prayer at the Temple
Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. (Acts 3:1)

Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, (Acts 8:14-15)

About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (Acts 12:1-3)

Jesus Reveals the End Times:
I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” (Rev 22:8-9)
3. Galilee: Synagogues: Kingdom (4:23-25)
And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick,
– those afflicted with various diseases and pains,
– those oppressed by demons,
– those having seizures, and paralytics,
… and he healed them.
And great crowds followed him
- from Galilee and the Decapolis, and
- from Jerusalem and Judea, and
- from beyond the Jordan.

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them,
- “All
authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
- Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
- And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:16-20)
4. Galilee: Mountain: Righteousness (4:23-25)
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
| Blessed are the poor in spirit, | for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
| Blessed are those who mourn, | for they shall be comforted. |
| Blessed are the meek, | for they shall inherit the earth. |
| Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, | for they shall be satisfied. |
| Blessed are the merciful, | for they shall receive mercy. |
| Blessed are the pure in heart, | for they shall see God. |
| Blessed are the peacemakers, | for they shall be called sons of God. |
| Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake | for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:1-12)
Jesus’ Ministry
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, / because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; / he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, / and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, / and the day of vengeance of our God; / to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— / to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, / the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, / the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; / they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, / the devastations of many generations. (Isaiah 61:1-4)

Jesus Begins to Preach
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus Heals the Sick
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[b] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
